BBC Radio 6’s Steve Lamacq selected Heaven or Las Vegas (4AD, 1990) as the latest inductee for its Sounds Music Album Club.

The retrospective honors keep coming for Cocteau Twins’ sixth studio album, which was originally released in September 1990, following the release of the first single, “Iceblink Luck,” the previous month.

Heaven or Las Vegas was the only Cocteau LP to break into the UK Top 10, where it spent one week at number 7. (It was in the national Top 40 for three weeks.) “Iceblink Luck” peaked at number 38 on the national singles chart. The album remains Cocteau Twins’ most commercially successful LP.

Former band member Simon Raymonde posted to Twitter

Lamacq, in his introduction, described it as an “[A]lbum the influence of which I think you can still hear in a lot of music which is being made today, sometimes on the periphery of pop music, but it’s definitely there, which is one of the reasons we chose this. Interestingly, this comes out in 1990, the same year as the debut album by The Sundays… who were probably one of the bands who already had been influenced by one of the earlier LPs by this band. They were and they still are phenomenally influential, this trio.” ▣
