Cocteau Twins fans delighted as Elizabeth Fraser joins her long-time friends and collaborators Massive Attack on their 2024 European tour.
The news broke via social media last week as photos and video surfaced of Fraser performing live with the band in Sweden. (Elizabeth’s spouse, Damon Reece, is the group’s drummer.) The excitement was furthered by Liz’s performance of Tim Buckley’s 1970 classic, “Song to the Siren,” which she and Robin Guthrie further immortalised with their 1983 cover as part of 4AD’s This Mortal Coil project. Bearing no resemblance to the TMC version, Fraser sang in her higher register as images of the ongoing attack on Gaza were projected onto a towering screen behind the artists. This lent a new air of poignancy to the performance.
Fraser has also performed songs co-written with Massive Attack, including the hit “Teardrop,” and the songs “Black Milk” and “Group Four,” all of which were featured on the LP Mezzanine from 1998.
As reported by Bill Pearis for Brooklyn Vegan, these live shows are the first for Massive Attack since the untimely death of their guitarist Angelo Bruschini.
Video clips of Elizabeth’s performances are circulating online, including her updated rendition of “Song to the Siren.”
Massive Attack will perform a number of further dates in the UK and Europe through August. ▣
